Getting started with any exercise or performance program.

6 TIPS we should all Consider when starting any strength and conditioning or fitness programme!

By Niamh Buffini
1. ABILITY OVER INABILITY. Your ability is worth it-consider what you are able to achieve whatever level- some stay strong by staying injury free (maintaining) some need to lift 3-4 times p/week. either way you are onto a winner staying focused on your ability.
2. BE PATIENT-if you have a good strength coach they will not rush, they should screen your movement ability, fitness ability and strength. From there they fill in gaps for you. Trust them and follow their advice but be clear on your goals.
3. DAILY RITUAL work at it- work hard at your exercise prescription. Your coach should give you things to work on at home, I would advice to take nothing for granted, this could be work on the court/field, a specific warm up, stretch down or exercise during your day, consider them your ritual and you will see quick results in a short space of time.
4. LONG TERM investment, if you are or your biggest supporters are paying and investing in your athletic career thank them everyday. They want to see you reach your potential and succeed in your sport. Reach for the stars, make it happen and be thankful.
5. ASK HOW, WHY, WHAT- ask your coach as many questions as possible, understand why, how and what you are doing. Expect to see results and ask why questions.
6. INVEST IN LIFE - be invested in all areas of your life. Joining the dots between performance/sport/exercise and life is something that we forget to do, performance on competition/in the your career or personal life is directly related to what we do at home, sleep, eat, rest , phone time, study and family & friends time. Invest and manage it all.

Happy exercising !!
